HCA - Talking with children and young people about loss and bereavement.
Children and young people who are cared for outside of their birth families have lived through significant losses. It can feel hard to know how to talk about this in a way that is helpful for the child or family members. We all have different ideas and tell different stories about what we believe happens, what people should do, and how to talk about loss which can create challenges to talking together.
This workshop aims to help those who attend grow their confidence in having simple, open and respectful conversations about loss and bereavement.
We will do this by:
- Looking at real life examples of conversations between professionals and children and families about loss and bereavement.
- Generating together a rich repertoire of stories about death and mourning practices, consider which we like the most and why and what the similarities and differences are between our stories.
- Reflect on the implications of choosing different stories for our relationships with the children and families we are working with, and for how they may go on.
Who should attend?
Social workers and other staff in Haringey Children’s Services interested in sharing their experiences and developing their understanding and skills in working with children and young people who have experienced loss and bereavement.
