HCA - Managing the Risks of Self Harm: Impact on Young adults -Facilitated by Marcia Rice

AIMS: To improve understanding of how self-harm and deliberate self-injury develops and its multi dimensional impact on young people and adults. Professionals will also have the opportunity to look at some of the clinical, social and behavioural issues which might arise.
LEARNING OUTCOMES:
By the end of the course participants should be able to:
- Distinguish between self-harm and self-injurious behaviour and identify the different manifestations of the disorders.
- Identify the nature, characteristic and prevalence of self-harm and self-injury.
- To Identify the individuals who are more at risk of self harm.
- Have greater awareness of the factors and situations and hazards that are likely to be stressors and triggers to self-harm.
- Identify key underlying factors associated with self harm, including the influence of past and unresolved traumas.
- Understand the experiences of children and young people who self-harm, and the impact on their emotional and social development.
- Understand women and men’s experiences of self-harm and self-injury and the impact of the environment on their behaviour.
- Understand some of the cultural, religious and social factors which contribute to the high rate of self harm among particular groups.
- Identify strategies and effective interventions for managing self harm and undertaking risk assessments.
- Develop more confidence in dealing with the professional issues and responses in the safeguarding and management of service users engaging in self-harm and self-injury.
