Mental Health Training – Primary School Age Children
Target Audience
This workshop is a valuable training session for professionals who work with, or have contact with, children and young people. It is particularly relevant for:
- General Practitioners (GPs), as they are often the primary point of referral.
- School staff, including:
- Special Educational Needs Coordinators (SENCOs)
- School nurses
- Pastoral leads and safeguarding officers
- Health visitors (supporting younger children and families)
- Paediatricians
- Social workers
- Educational psychologists
- Youth offending teams / youth justice workers
- Community mental health professionals (where applicable)

Training Description
This session will support colleagues to develop a clear understanding of the Haringey Children and Young People’s Mental Health Service, including our role in supporting children, young people, and parents. It will also provide an overview of referral pathways and processes to ensure appropriate and timely access to support, as well as the steps taken when safeguarding concerns arise.
Learning Objectives
- To develop an understanding of professional roles and responsibilities in the assessment and treatment of children and young people aged 0–17.
- To understand service thresholds and criteria for access to support.
- To learn how to make an appropriate and effective referral.
- To identify common mental health difficulties experienced by primary school-aged children.
- To develop an understanding of the parent-led approach and the rationale for its use.
- To understand the steps taken when safeguarding issues arise and how concerns are appropriately managed and escalated.
