HCA - Jewish Womens Aid - Supporting the Jewish Community Impacted by VAWG
This interactive four-hour training session delivered by Jewish Women’s Aid will support professionals working with children and families to develop their understanding of Jewish culture and religious practice and how these may intersect with safeguarding, domestic abuse and harmful practices.
The session will explore:
- Jewish culture and practice – an introduction to the diversity of Jewish communities, including Orthodox and Haredi communities, family life, religious observance, gender roles and the importance of community.
- Understanding barriers to disclosure and accessing support – including community pressures, stigma, shame, confidentiality and fears about the consequences of seeking help.
- Domestic abuse within a Jewish context – recognising how coercive and controlling behaviour may present and how aspects of faith, family and community can be misused by perpetrators.
- Harmful practices – exploring issues including forced marriage, so-called ‘honour’-based abuse and other forms of abuse that professionals may encounter, while avoiding assumptions or cultural stereotyping.
- Working effectively with Jewish children and families – developing culturally informed, trauma-responsive approaches to identification, enquiry, safeguarding and support.
The session will include two case studies giving participants the opportunity to apply their learning to realistic scenarios and consider appropriate professional responses.
There will be dedicated space for discussion, questions and reflection, allowing participants to explore issues arising from their own practice and build confidence in supporting Jewish children, parents and families affected by VAWG and harmful practices.
